January began as a simple challenge — paint, create, and show up consistently. I expected it to be about making finished pieces and building a body of work. Looking back now, I realize it became something different.

The challenge gave me permission to experiment. Some days led to small studies, some to unexpected directions, and some simply reminded me to slow down and look more closely. Not every piece felt successful, but each one became part of a larger conversation.

I’ve realized that the paintings themselves were only part of the story. What stayed with me most was learning to notice. Looking closely at ordinary things, scanning for shapes, textures, and moments that might otherwise be overlooked, has begun to influence where my work is going.

Some of those ideas are still finding their place. A few led toward fly fishing subjects and quiet observations from time on the water. Others remain unfinished thoughts waiting for another day.

Challenges have a way of ending on the calendar while continuing quietly afterward.
